Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
As the term ends, I reflect on all that has happened during term 1. It has been very busy indeed, yet we even managed to get our emergency shelter-in-place drill completed yesterday! Our new sensory room is up and running along with other initiatives such as Project Based Learning, Initialit in Foundation to year 2 and Explicit Direct Instruction for the whole school.
Our Foundation students are feeling much more at home with us now and the buddy program has contributed a lot to this.
Today our building project began with the removal and upcoming replacement of the school roof on the classroom block. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us over the holidays so that this work can be completed before we return for term 2
The Harmony Day celebration, school liturgies including Ash Wednesday and the moving Stations of the Cross liturgy yesterday have all contributed to our identity as a Catholic school.
Sincere thanks to all staff for their efforts and enthusiasm in getting behind these events and initiatives. There is a lot of time that goes in to planning and preparing for these. Thanks also to parents for your support of our school and assistance whenever required. Special thanks to our wonderful students who make this school a great place to be.
Have a blessed and peaceful Easter everyone.
Best wishes,
Roslyn Joyner
Principal

Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe environment for all of our students, please find our Child Safety and Wellbeing policy below. This policy outlines our strategies and arrangements to keep children safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected and the voices are heard. It summarises the actions we will take across all 11 Child Safe Standards to ensure a child safe culture is championed and modelled across the school. We ask that parents and carers familiarise themselves with our Child Safety and Wellbeing policy to ensure that families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing, and that our whole St Joseph's school community work together to keep children safe.
Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
If you have any concerns or suggestions about Child Safety, please speak with our school Child Safe Champions - Ros Joyner, Camillo Redi or Katie Balfour.
We are very proud of our students who made a commitment to prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation this term and after weeks of preparation celebrated the Sacrament last week.
Thank you to all involved in helping to prepare these children.

Holy Week
As we enter Holy Week, we continue to reflect on the lives of people vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice and how we can respond by supporting Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal.
Your generosity is the pebble that allows Caritas Australia to create the ripples that will improve the livelihoods of vulnerable communities, supporting them to flourish and creating opportunities for future generations to live to their full potential.
Thank you!
Please return all Project Compassion boxes and envelopes to the school office by Friday 26th May or donate online via the Caritas Australia website at www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion
A message from Deacon Mark
Old Testament Promises
Easter Week is the most profoundly moving and intense season of the Church year. If we immerse ourselves in Holy Week, if we have been swept up in the timeless beauty and relevance of scripture and liturgy, symbol and sacrifice, then we can re-live those events of 2000 years ago. That is why the Church in her wisdom has long made this a rich celebration above all others.
Beginning with Palm Sunday, replete with symbolism of the palm branches, the blessing of the holy oils at Chrism Mass on Tuesday, washing of feet and stripping of the tabernacle and altar on Holy Thursday, recounting the Passion story and reverencing of the Cross in the stark church on Good Friday and finally and wonderfully the eruption of light and joy in the Easter Vigil Mass on Easter eve. Full participation enables full engagement of the senses in the sacred experience.
The relevant gospels (Matt 27:11-54; John 18:1-19) have been at the centre of our celebration of the Word, but hopefully we have reflected too on the many Old Testament readings, particularly from Isaiah, which point towards our Easter joy.
Following Christ through the darkness of Good Friday, we reflect on Isaiah Chapter 52 and 53, thinking, “I recognise this! The suffering servant of God who takes all the sins of humanity upon his shoulders, who comes for the salvation of the Israelites (and of us).” Is this foretelling, many centuries before, the Good News of Jesus, the Son of God who does just that? And Chapters 54 and 55 of Isaiah gives us glimpses of light at the end of the tunnel, of promise, cause for confidence and rejoicing. These lead seamlessly to the pinnacle of the Easter story. In glorious fulfilment of the ancient promises, Jesus is victorious over death itself!! (Matt 28:1-10) Alleluia, alleluia!
Happy Easter indeed!
Deacon Mark Kelly

Aussie of the Month - February
Xanthe has had a wonderful start to the year. She displays the values of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness and willingly helps those around her, showing compassion and kindness towards others. Xanthe demonstrates leadership both in and out of the classroom. She embodies our school values each day by being respectful, acting safely and being a responsible learner. Well done on your contribution to our school community Xanthe and for being the Aussie of the Month for February.
Congratulations Piper on such a positive beginning to 2023. Your ability to show genuine kindness and compassion to others in your class is appreciated by all. You demonstrate a keen interest and willingness to embrace our learning about Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness in The Resilience Project. You willingly lead by example, promoting the School Wide Expectations of being respectful, acting safely and being a responsible learner. Congratulations for being such a positive role model in our school community Piper and for being the Aussie of the Month for March.
Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour
In the Classroom
As the term comes to a close your class teachers should have shared their class expectations in a slide show. These class expectations reflect the behaviours that are important to each individual class as agreed by the students of that class.
Also, our students have been creating posters to promote the agreed expectations that inform our behaviour at St. Joseph’s. Next term a team will select the best examples that promote what it means to be a S.T.A.R. and these will be displayed around the school.
Reflection Forms
Some of you may have received a Reflection Form that your child has completed. Thank you for returning them.
The forms allow students to consider their choices, how they felt and how they can make improved choices in the future.
More importantly, they inform us and assist us to gain a better understanding of our students' behaviour and how we can support them.
The Forms will be completed by a teacher with the student. The teacher and student will sign the form. The form will then be sent home for the parent/guardian to read, sign and return to school.
Contact will be made with parents/guardians prior to the form coming home.

We are a School Community, who
Take Responsibility,
Act Safely
and are always Respectful
Further to this our Staff have developed a matrix which highlights the behaviours we expect of all the members of our community.
In these first weeks, the Staff are reintroducing their classes to the expectations we have at St. Joseph’s that make our students S.T.A.R.s
Have a conversation with your child about being a STAR at St. Joseph’s.

The Grade 5 boys won 2 or the 4 games in their pool and I’m excited already for them for next year. The Grade 6 Boys and Girls team both played off in the Grand Final with the girls victorious.

This term the staff have been and will be involved in professional learning experiences to improve student outcomes. The first professional learning experience took place at the start of the year where staff furthered their understanding in delivering Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) - an impactful and evidence based teaching model that ensures students are taught exactly what they need to know. Our training was conducted via zoom with the lead author of Explicit Direct Instruction - The Power of a Well-Crafted, Well-Taught Lesson, John Hollingsworth. Our EDI journey has now begun and throughout this term, staff have become familiar with following the process and delivering explicit direct lessons.

We have received reports of primary school students being collected from the Warragul Regional College (WRC) bus loop. This is not allowed. WRC is a transition station for students to catch their country bus home. WRC cannot allow students to leave the bus loop or parents to enter on site. Parents must pick up students directly from school and not the bus loop. Please read the important information below from Warragul Regional College outlining the rules to use the bus loop.

Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. In some cases, if you email your child's classroom teacher, they may be away and may not be able to check their emails to forward to the office. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
